Collagen Injection / ZydermŪ & ZyplastŪ

What are Collagen Injections?

As previously mentioned , collagen is a main component protein of our skin and found throughout the human body. Normal, undamaged skin is approximately 80% collagen. Over time, however, our skin is subjected to more and more of the sun's harmful rays which break down our collagen, making the skin look older and less healthy. One treatment used to repair the skin's appearance and increase the collagen in our skin is to inject purified bovine collagen into the skin.

Injectable collagen was patented by the Collagen Corporation under the trade names Zyderm and Zyplast and received FDA approval in 1981. These types of injectables may be used to improve coarser wrinkles, fine lines and acne scars.

Zyderm I is a formula of 25% bovine collagen, 0.3% lidocaine. It is typically used for more superficial fines lines and wrinkles. Zyderm II is 50% bovine collagen, 0.3% lidocaine, and is generally used on more moderate scarring and wrinkles. Zyplast is used on the more severe wrinkling and scarring, and has a more dense composition.

How Long Do they Last?

Zyplast I is said to last anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months.

Zyplast II may last 4 to 5 months.

Zyderm can last 9 months to 1 year.

During the Treatment

As some patients may be allergic to various elements that make up a collagen injectable, a physician will usually do a test patch to ensure you can be safely injected.

Treatment with collagen consists of your doctor using a fine needle and inserting the injections at several different points along the treatment area. Some stinging or burning during this injection is not unusual.

Post-Treatment

Immediately after the injections are administered there may be some discomfort, stinging or pain around the treatment area. In some cases bruising may also follow, but is usually minor. This should pass within a few days and any associated swelling will also pass. If you notice the symptoms after several days, it is advisable to contact your doctor.

Results from Collagen

Typically fine lines and wrinkles will be noticeably smaller and less defined after treatment. The length of time the treatments are effective depends on your individual case and should be discussed with your doctor. Generally patients see effective results for two to three months.
