What is Restylane®?

What is it?

Restylane is a dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar which binds with water and gives skin volume. One quality of hyaluronic acid which is desirable is that it binds with water, so that as the Restylane begins to be broken down naturally in the body, the hyaluronic acid continues binding to water molecules within the body. This aides in increasing the amount of time the treatment lasts.

What does it treat?

Typically Restylane is injected into areas along the lower portion of the face, as well as around the eyes, to improve wrinkles and creases. Restylane may also be used around the lips and mouth to remove "smokers' lines".

One of the most popular uses for Restylane of late has been to increase the size of lips. As larger lips have become more and more desirable, more women have requested Restylane for the lips. This helps give lips a fuller, pouty appearance.

Treatment

Restylane is injected into the treatment area, for example the lips or the creases between the nose and lips. This will improve the creases, lines or hollows on the skin's surface. Topical anesthetics may be used to decrease any discomfort. No allergy testing is required.

How long does it last?

Results from Restylane injections will be seen immediately as the volume of the gel helps to improve wrinkles and hollows. The results will last in the lips anywhere from 3 to 6 months, and on other parts of the face for 6 to 9 months.

Side effects with any injectable, including Restylane, may include swelling, bruising and perhaps some redness for several days.
