Collagen and Lips

One of the great insults of time’s passage is that our lips’ volume naturally decreases as we age. Injectable fillers such as Collagen, Restylane® and others are a safe and effective way to increase lip volume and repair the impact of age.

Lip injections or lip augmentation is the process of creating plump, full lips by injecting filler into the lips and surrounding skin. Other substances used to enhance lips are fat fillers, Restylane and Perlane, Radiesse, Collagen, among others. Other types are implantable materials like AlloDerm and SoftForm.

The Treatment

An ultrafine needle is used to inject the filler material directly into the lips to create the full look. In addition, surrounding skin may be injected to diminish the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The location of the injection is very important and may determine patient satisfaction.

How Long Do the Injections Last?

The length of time the lips look full following treatment will vary greatly based on the filler material you and your doctor select. The treatment may be effective for anywhere between 3 months to a year or longer. Discuss the type of material being used with your doctor and the length of effectiveness to determine which material is right for you.

Side Effects from Lip Enhancement

There are some common side effects from any injection which are true for lip injections as well such as redness and irritation at the injection site, bleeding, and swelling. These may last up to a week and generally pass without further problem. If these issues persist, call your doctor immediately. In addition, asymmetry may result in the lips and should be addressed by the treating physician. If an implant is used, there is a risk of migration or extrusion.

With some fillers an allergy test is required. Discuss this with your physician to determine if the filler is right for you.

Injectables include: Artefill, Botox, Collagen Injections, Restylane, Sculptra, Juvederm, Fat Fillers, CosmoDerm & CosmoPlast, and Perlane.
