Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid-based gel. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring sugar which binds to water, giving skin its volume as well as acting as a type of cushion for the skin and delivering necessary nutrients to it. As our skin is subjected to greater sun damage over time, we lose adipose (natural fatty tissue) causing our skin to lose its volume. In addition, sun damages our collagen making our skin wrinkled and less youthful. Juvederm is one dermal filler which aides in smoothing these wrinkles and improving the skin.
What does it treat?
There are two types of Juvederm, Juvederm Ultra, which may be used to correct moderate wrinkles on the face and add fullness to the lips, or Juvederm Ultra Plus which has a denser formulation which is used to improve the appearance of deeper wrinkles.
Treatment
Juvederm is injected into the problem area through a fine needle. Topical anesthetic may be used to mitigate your discomfort before any treatment session. Juvederm does not require allergy testing prior to treatment.
How long does it last?
Results from Juvederm generally last from 9 to 12 months.
The most common side effects from Juvederm are general injection site reactions such as bruising or swelling, redness, lumps, or irritation. These generally last less than seven days. As with any injection, there is a risk of skin infection. If you have a history of serious allergic reactions, or a history of allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins, you should not use Juvederm. Also notify your doctor of any medications you are on. Should any side effects persist, contact your doctor.
