What are Botox® Injections?

Botox comes from botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin protein
Botox is used to paralyze the muscles which cause dynamic wrinkles

There are so many treatments available today for wrinkles and fine lines. The main consideration should be the exact cause and nature of the wrinkles which concern you. For patients who are concerned with dynamic wrinkles, often Botox is recommended.

How Does It Work?

Botox works by paralyzing the muscles which cause the dynamic wrinkles, preventing them from repeatedly producing those problem lines. Botox, or Botulinum Toxin, is a neurotoxin protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. By injecting very small amounts of the protein we are able to immobilize the muscles which are causing the frown lines or wrinkles. Generally an improvement can be seen within several days of the treatment and may last up to 4 months, although results may vary.

The History of Botox

Botox was in use in ophthalmology for a number of years to treat crossed-eyed patients or patients with muscle/eye problems. The muscles causing the problem would be injected with Botox and the problem was corrected. It wasn't until Alistair and Jean Carruthers in Vancouver, Canada observed the improvement of dynamic wrinkles that the cosmetic skin applications of Botox were realized.

Results Fade

Botox does not permanently paralyze muscles, which can seen as both good and bad. Bad in that a patient requires repeated injections over time to maintain results, and good in that any over-treatment or undesirable effects are of short duration.

Botox Over-Treatment & Side Effects

One of the most common side effects when receiving Botox injections is over-treatment. This means the muscles being treated receive too much Botox causing unintended or over paralysis of the muscle. The good thing though with Botox is that this is only temporary. Results may last up to 4 months.
