Artefill was the first FDA-approved dermal filler which is not absorbed by the body’s natural processes. Generally Artefill is injected around the mouth to address ‘smile lines’. Artefill is comprised of 20% PMMA microspheres and 80% purified bovine collagen (as well as 0.3% lidocaine). Artefill is made and marketed by Artes Medical of San Diego, CA.
Wrinkles and fine lines are a common sight as we age. Sun damages our skin over time causing it to look older and lose it youthful texture and vibrance. Dermal fillers like Artefill are often used to help smooth the skin and improve appearance.
How is it Performed?
Your doctor will inject the skin of the treatment area with a needle after a lidocaine anesthetic is used. A skin test is generally performed to determine if you are allergic to the lidocaine or the bovine collagen within the substance.
Following the skin test, the physician will inject the Artefill just beneath the wrinkle, above the skin fat layer. Results are typically immediate.
Risks
As with any filler, redness and swelling post-treatment is common. Bruising is also possible. In rare cases, itching and rashes may appear, as well as granulomas or lumping. Be sure to consult with your physician about all the possible side-effects prior to any treatment.
People who have skin conditions prior to treatment with Artefill, such as skin rashes, pimples, bumps or hives, or infection should not receive any injection. Consult with your physician and be sure the issue has passed before proceeding with any treatment course. Artefill's safety or efficacy is not yet established beyond one year.
